Phycoremediation: Use of Algae to Sequester Heavy Metals

چکیده

Industrialization, natural processes, and urbanization have potentially accelerated the pace level of heavy metals (HMs) in soil underground water. These HMs may be accumulated plants animals when they take up such contaminated water, then make their way into human food chains. Several remediation technologies been employed to HMs. Diverse conventional means as ion exchange, electrolytic technologies, chemical extraction past, but majority these techniques are not economical for extensive projects need stringent control continuous monitoring. also low efficiency effective removal In this context, algae offer an eco-friendly sustainable alternative from polluted The accumulation by macro microalgae is advantageous phycoremediation compared other approaches that environmentally friendly. So, there urgent necessity refine chances algae, employing genetic engineering create transgenic species over-expressing metallothioneins phytochelatins, which form complexes with store them vacuoles maximum use phytoaccumulation while removing hazardous aquatic habitats. This review outlines major sources HMs, adverse effects on humans, potential phytoremediation (called phycoremediation), uptake mechanism

Phycoremediation of Heavy Metals by Chlorella pyrenoidosa and Spirogyra communis

Environmental contamination by heavy metals is a serious problem due to their incremental accumulation in the food chain. Unlike most organic wastes and the microbial load in aquatic bodies, metal contaminants are not biodegradable, tending to accumulate in living organisms, thus becoming a permanent burden on ecosystems (Bayo, 2012). Most heavy metals are transition elements with incompletely ...

Selective biosorption of heavy metals by algae*

Thirty strains of algae were examined for their biosorption abilities for the uptake of cadmium, lead, nickel and zinc from aqueous solutions. A wide range of adsorption capacities was observed between the different strains of algae and between the four metals. The cyanophyceae Lyngbya taylorii exhibited high uptake capacities for the four metals. It was confirmed by using instrumental analysis...

Adsorption of heavy metals using marine algae

The discharge of heavy metals into aquatic ecosystem has become a matter of concern in South Africa over the last few decades. These pollutants are introduced into the aquatic systems significantly as a result of various industrial operations. Conventional methods for metal removal such as ion exchange, reverse osmosis, etc. have proven to be expensive. Due to the increasing awareness of ecolog...

Biosorption of Heavy Metals Using Algae: a Review

Various algal species can be used for removing heavy metals like Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn from aqueous solutions successfully. Biological removal of metals is possible by both living and non living algal biomass. Algal biosorption is dependent on various parameters such as pH, biomass concentration, temperature, contact time and initial concentration of metal ion in the solution. The potential me...

Fe–Mn Concretions and Nodules to Sequester Heavy Metals in Soils

Over the last two decades, considerable attention has been paid to the management of metal-contaminated soils. Fe-Mn concretions and nodules can be used to sequester metals by adsorption. Fe-Mn concretions and nodules are discrete bodies with variable compositions formed in the soil system under alternating oxidizing and reducing conditions. This chapter highlights the high adsorption capacity ...
